FEYA Nomination
Northern Virginia, February 23, 2010
John Schatz, a Systems Engineer at SPEC Innovations, developed an infrastructure dependency and interdependency model to describe the System-of-Systems (SoS) logistics system dependency model that led to the nomination for one of our customers, Lesley Painchaud, for the 2010 Federal Engineer of the Year Award (FEYA), and selection as one of the Agency level winners. Lesley conducted SoS cascading effects model of 660+ Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) systems. Overview Lesley Painchaud and John Schatz designed and created a CORE model using DLA systems data and managed the development effort to create output required to support this analysis. This output identified the cascading effects and reverse cascading impacts from the loss of one system, providing input into multiple dependent systems. In addition, this analysis supports the identification of propagation of cyber impacts from the introduction of cyber vulnerabilities to the SoS model. The output was delivered in a format suitable for geospatial visualization or logical network visualization. Lesley and John developed a system of mission impact analysis that includes ranking of systems by degree of “reach” across 3 dependency dimensions – organization, cyber, and location.
