A Strategy for Cost-Saving Scenario Selection

Unified Modeling Language (UML) and other techniques have emphasized the use of scenarios as a means to begin system engineering design and architecture work. The author has used a similar approach for over ten years called “Middle-Out” system engineering and architecture development.The “Middle-Out” process has been successfully used in advanced concept technology demonstration (ACTD) and architecture development projects where the number of originating requirements was few.
The approach most often used for scenario selection is ad hoc. As a result the list of scenarios can be largely overlapping and can leave gaps in needed capabilities.
This paper demonstrates an approach to intelligently selecting a series of scenarios that build one upon the other to reach the mission objectives.
